SUCCESSFUL WEBINAR SHARES KNOWLEDGE ON THE EU REGULATION ON CLASSIFICATION, LABELLING & PACKAGING (CLP) OF SUBSTANCES & MIXTURES APPLICABLE TO SOUTHERN AFRICAN NATURAL INGREDIENTS DESTINED FOR THE EU

October 7th, 2021

Given the importance of the European Union (EU) market for exporters of natural ingredients, five partner BSOs collaborated to offer this webinar, which was held on 30 September 2021.

In support of their companies from the Natural Ingredients sector, the webinar was jointly presented by the dtic, CECOSA, SAEOPA, TIKZN and WESGRO, in collaboration with the SIPPO programme and the UNIDO implemented GQSP-SA project, both funded by SECO, to inform exporters on the EU CLP regulation, and whether this applies to their products. Having this knowledge, exporters will be better prepared in dealing with their customers in Europe and have gained competitive advantage in support of their EU importers. The CLP is a complex legislation and is a challenge for SMEs to determine whether it is applicable to them.

This highly informative webinar, which was very well attended, was conducted by a SIPPO Senior International Sector Expert on natural ingredients. The information guided the participants on the key points about EU CLP that will assist SMEs to better understand and navigate the CLP regulation. This will ensure that they understand the data requirements to enable correct classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures. The webinar also explained the reason for the different requirements to ensure that exporters are fully prepared to comply with the CLP requirements and provided useful background information for the BSOs to inform and support their existing and export-ready enterprises.

To further support exporters and potential exporters in navigating these CLP requirements, a simplified guide was launched at the end of the webinar and is now available for use by BSOs and SMEs from the natural ingredient sector targeting the European market. This guide can be viewed by clicking on the link below.

Following the webinar, the BSOs commented that the information was most valuable for the producers which should derive value from this, as well as it being an eye-opener for the officials from the BSOs.
